Taff's given me this idea, from his ebay shop, which I think is absolutely excellent.
He offers books with personalised signatures from the author, the kind of thing you might get if you went to a book signing in a shop. Well, I wonder, could this be used as a major selling point, using this site. I've already got the page on first editions (so successful that I've actually sold no books whilst it's been in effect) so I thought a second page, advertising personalised signing as a Great Thing might be a way of selling no extra books too. Anyone any other ideas or advice on the subject?

Dear Roger,
I hope this is not too much of a deviation from the intention of your post. It has occurred to me that the greatest problems Lulu authors face in getting others to read their works are that we’re completely unknown and that we get no publicity. We do, however, have one means by which we can expose others to our work: word of mouth. There’s the beginning of a great little community here. Unfortunately, I doubt if many of us have read one another’s works. I’d like to suggest that we make our works available for free (at least in e-book form). Whether we do so just to other members of this site or to the general public, this would let others read our works and decide if they liked them without those persons having to part with their money. I’ll grant that one person’s tastes can vary radically from another’s, and that I might not like another author’s work here while that person might not like mine. Still, if I read a book on this site that I liked, I would suggest it to friends, who might just read it themselves. If I don’t read that book, I won’t be suggesting it to anyone. We’ve got a marvellous opportunity to support one another here, and an equally marvellous opportunity to discuss our works.

I agree with you and therefore I would be willing to submit pdf copies of two of my books as a starter. For under 18s I will send a copy of Officer Gentry and the Ghost of Mavis Adder to the first three who request it, and to over 18s, and still to the first three who ask, I will send pdf copies of "When no Light Shines". That should set the ball rolling, but I do insist on that limitation of 3. Dear Peter,
First of all, I do want to apologise for the name error. I'm glad to hear you might be interested in my idea. I've had a fair amount of luck with free downloads from Lulu. That said, I haven't been selling well at all. Not a surprised there, I suppose. At any rate, Lulu authors face a real uphill battle, and I for one would rather be read for free than not read at all. Best of luck.

I keep checking my emails, but there have been no requests yet. Still, it's early days and I quite agree with you over it's better to be read for free than not be read at all

48 days later and no requests. So if you can't give them away, what chance is there of selling them? Trouble is we all know we'rte good, but until you've been tested in the market place nobody else does.
