Hi Susan. Sorry for the delay in replying but have been really busy.

The forum threads started by 'Automatic' are actually created by someone clicking on the discuss button at the bottom of each page. These are threads which are actually linked to the individual page and do not feature in the main forum index. When the discuss button is clicked on and no thread has previously been create for that page then the thread is created by the wiki, therefore 'Automatic'. This would only happen where a (0) is given next to the discuss button. Obviously whoever clicked on the button decided not to actually add a message and that way empty threads can be created by the so-called 'Automatic' and with no title either. Where the discuss button shows a number greater than (0) then there will be that many posts attached to that per-page-discussion. So it's best not to click on a (0) discuss unless you wish to leave a post relating to that particular page.

Hello

I see that this topic was started by "Automatic" (not me!). We don't have a member called "Automatic", but why would the wiki system start a topic? Odd! Anyway to put some content into the topic, I put indexes of some of my books on the wiki so that Google would pick up the topics covered in the books.

Deric is a retired engineer who spent most of his working life aboard ships, barges and rigs in the oil exploration industry. He served his National Service in the Royal Navy and afterwards joined the Merchant Navy. His experience landed him a job in the North Sea working for a Hydrographic Survey Company on Survey Ships, conducting seabed surveys for oil rig locations and pipeline systems. He travelled worldwide working on underwater electronic equipment as well as surface and underwater navigation systems.
His experiences in the many countries he visited and the different people he worked with gave him an excellent grounding in very many different cultures and lifestyles.
‘White Slaves’ is one of the three adventure books he’s written. The others being ‘The National Heroes,’ a story of National Servicemen in the Royal Navy during the Suez Crisis and ‘Innocent on the Run,’ the fast moving tale of a young lad who misses his ship in an American port and is stranded, going on the run as an illegal immigrant.
He has also written a book of Welsh Humour entitled, ‘Danny Daisycutter and Friends,’ a tale of three Welsh geriatric delinquents who cause havoc in their Valleys’ town.
Deric lives in South Wales with his wife, children and grandchildren

As there seem to be quite a few members who do not yet have an avatar here are some links for a few sites where you can get them free.

You should be able to right click on any of the avatars on these and save to My Pictures or wherever you want to store it temporarily. Then go to My Account top right, click on My Profile, then My buddy icon (avatar). From here you should be able to upload the avatar to Wikidot. Please note that, at present, Wikidot doesn't support animated avatars. Alternatively just create your own avatar as a JPEG or GIF and upload that. The avatars must be no larger than 100 x 100 pixels.

Site Members: Order in which members are listed here

If anyone is wondering why some members are shown higher up in the site members list, despite joining the wiki at a later date than the members shown below them, this is because the members are automatically ordered by the date on which members joined Wikidot and not the date they joined this particular wiki. For the members pages I have used the date they joined this wiki and obviously the Site Map shows these pages in alphabetical order as this is created and updated automatically, and on this mine, at present, is bottom, so this seems about as fair as I can get it. Please step forward Mr Aardwolf Absolom of Abingdon.

Speaking for myself, I'm still learning what the site has to offer and how to achieve what appeals to me from the limited number of commands available (this isn't a complaint - I need these limitations or I get lost) At the moment it doesn't seem that there's enough on this page to warrant a second page. If and when more users add their titles to it then dividing it might be appropriate. What concerns me is that my own output dominates the page when I would prefer it not to, but that's inevitable at the moment with relatively few UK writers using it. I've tried publicising this Wiki far and wide and will continue to do so. I also think a few images would cheer the page up a bit.

Books Fiction: Does this page need splitting?

Do any of you think that this page (and eventually the books-factual page) needs splitting into different pages for the various sections (fantasy, relationships etc) as I reckon that it might eventually get unwealdy and it would be easier to sort it out before it gets too big?

It would mean that there would be an extra click to get to each page, but with less content on each page they could be made to look much more attractive, with images of covers, brief descriptions, prices etc, much as some of the member's pages are.

The main books-fiction page could also then be improved with a few images etc, so that it's not just a set of links.

Let me know what you think. At the moment this wouldn't take very long to do.

PS - This particular forum thread is attached to the page books-fiction (as a per-page discussion) and will not feature in the forum proper, though will show up in the recent posts etc. These per-page discussions can be created or reached via the discussion button at the bottom of each page and are useful places to discuss the content of any particular page. By the way, if you click on the discussion button when it shows (0) a forum thread for that page will be started, whether or not you decide to post to it, so try not to click on it when there's a (0) unless you want to post otherwise we end up with masses of empty threads. The content of any particular page can also be rated via the rate button. Useful for letting us all know what works and what doesn't, and which pages are popular, though this feature will probably become more useful when many more pages are added. Finally, the tags button can be used to assign certain keywords to your page, much like the keywords on your Lulu content pages. When created these tags will show up in the tag cloud on the side menu. The tags in this cloud (and those at the bottom of each tagged page) can be clicked on so that all pages with that particular tag will be listed next to the cloud. The more pages each tag is used on, the darker and larger the tag in the cloud becomes, so the cloud should be a good indicator of overall content on the site. Steppenfreak has used these tags to particularly good effect so take a look at her pages to see how they work. I will copy this last section to a thread on the main forum so that those who don't see this particular thread can find out about it.
